The images that accompany the lyrics are taken from a movie presumably in 1964, made for the French Scopitone jukebox, rivals of the Italian Cinebox, designed to watch videos along with the music. The clip is dedicated to the first great and memorable success of Françoise Hardy, a melancholy song written by the French singer-songwriter in her teens, and first published in 1962.

The video is shot by a director who later will become very important for French cinema, Claude Lelouch, and has some curiosity that we comment later. (See also: Ce petit coeur),

Lyrics and translation

All the boys and girls of my age
Walk in the street two by two
All the boys and girls of my age
Know what it means to be happy
And eye to eye, and hand in hand

They walk in love without any fear of tomorrow
Yes but instead I 'm alone in the streets, with my soul full of sadness
Yes but instead I 'm alone because nobody loves me

My days, as my nights
Are alike in every way
Without joy and full of trouble
No one whisper in my ear: "I love you"

All the boys and girls of my age
Make together projects about their future
All the boys and girls of my age
Know very well what love means
And eye to eye, and hand in hand

They walk in love without any fear of tomorrow
Yes but instead I 'm alone in the streets, with my soul full of sadness
Yes but instead I 'm alone because nobody loves me

Mes jours comme mes nuits
Sont en tous points pareils
Sans joies et pleins d'ennuis
Quand donc pour moi brillera le soleil?

My days, as my nights
Are alike in every way
Without joy and full of trouble
So, when the sun will shine for me?

As the boys and girls of my age
Soon would I know what love is ?
As the boys and girls of my age
I wonder when the day  ...

when, with the eyes in his eyes and hand in hand
I will have the heart full of happiness without fear of tomorrow

The day when I will no more have my soul full of sadness
The day when I also will have someone who loves me

Scopitone Video

The video from which pictures are taken was not filmed for television, but for special juke-boxes surmounted by a TV-like screen, in which it was possible to associate the images to the music, just as the modern video clips of MTV, which are to all intents and purposes the precursors. Apart from a very rudimentary attempt in the U.S. in the 40s (Soundie), this new entertainment medium designed for bars and dance clubs had been launched in the early '60s with the name Cinebox in Italy and then in France with the name Scopitone.

Both of the two rival companies have attempted a few years later to enter the rich U.S. market. The company Scopitone has focused in particular on the the vaguely sexy image that France has in USA ("french kiss" and so on), so in the video clips were inserted on purpose, and in a completely uncorrelated way from the song, some details sexy (for the time).

So in this clip, which should comment on a song (beautiful) about the turmoil and the melancholy of adolescence, they are included two extras that show their legs. Inevitably, given that they are standing with a wide skirt on a gondola of a Luna Park (the set chosen for the clip). In another similar video Sylvie Vartan sings (dressed as a good family girl of the 60s) in a pool where a group of extras swims in bikini, and at one point one of them can be seen also topless.

Please note the detail of the garter, which is still a timeless erotic tool, but at that time (the video should be of 1963 or at the latest in 1964), in the golden age of the garters, a common accessory for all women (the tights will be put on the market a few years later, and they will start the mini skirts fashion) and continuously object of attention by the men. To remember the car of that period, with doors opening toward the front, from which it was impossible for a woman to go out without showing the garters to a passerby in the right position.
