La cura (The Cure)

I'll protect you from fears and hypochondria,
by disturbances that now you'll meet on your way.
Injustices and deceptions of your time,
failures that you will attract because of your nature.

...

I'll weave your hair like threads of a song.
I know the laws of the world, and I will bring them to you as a gift.
I'll overcome the gravitational currents,
The space and the light not to grow you old.

I'll save you from all kind of melancholy
because you are a special person and I will take care of you ...
I do, that I will take care of you.

These are the first and the last verses of the most famous song of Franco Battiato, one of the most important musician and songwriters of the recent years in Italy. A song about a transcendental love, the love of a master, a sapient, but a love in a material world, nevertheless. Probably the best love song of all times and all languages. You can listen to this song easily on YouTube and download it on iTunes.

Ti solleverò dai dolori e dai tuoi sbalzi d'umore,
dalle ossessioni delle tue manie.
Supererò le correnti gravitazionali,
lo spazio e la luce
per non farti invecchiare.

E guarirai da tutte le malattie,
perché sei un essere speciale,
ed io, avrò cura di te.

Vagavo per i campi del Tennessee
(come vi ero arrivato, chissà).

I profumi d'amore inebrieranno i nostri corpi,

Se telefonando (If, calling)

How to leave your lover with a phone call? A very common question, maybe now even a SMS or a Whatsapp message could be enough. But this is not a comedian style song, it's a dramatic one indeed, the woman that is singing is divided by the need to finish a romance and the wish to continue it. And the wonderful, epic music of Ennio Morricone, together with the impressive performance of Mina (Mina Mazzini, the most important pop singer all-time, unfortunately very little  known outside Italy, because of her fear of the airplane travels) do the rest. Absolutely necessary listen to this song on YouTube or iTunes.

The wonder of the night
The immensity of the sea
Surprised us two, strangers at that time

Then your hands in the dark
suddenly on mine,
It grew too fast
this our love.

If, calling
I could say you goodby
I'd do it

...

But I'm not able to explain you
that this our love, just born
is finished already

...

Italian lyrics

Lo stupore della notte
spalancata sul mar
ci sorprese che eravamo sconosciuti
io e te.

Poi nel buio le tue mani
d'improvviso sulle mie,
è cresciuto troppo in fretta
questo nostro amor.

Se telefonando
io potessi dirti addio
ti chiamerei.

Se io rivedendoti
fossi certa che non soffri
ti rivedrei.

Se guardandoti negli occhi
sapessi dirti basta
ti guarderei.

Ma non so spiegarti
che il nostro amore appena nato
è già finito.

Se telefonando
io volessi dirti addio
ti chiamerei.

Se io rivedendoti
fossi certa che non soffri
ti rivedrei.

Se guardandoti negli occhi
sapessi dirti basta
ti guarderei.

Woman, the main mystery for every man. Impossible to understand a human being with our identical DNA, but a different and probably better approach to the life. The author of this song, Maurizio Ruggeri, grew up in family of all women, and tried to give some answer. A song written for the main follower of Mina between the Italian female singers, Fiorella Mannoia, probably still the number one in our Country.

...

We have too much imagination, and if we tell a lie
is (only) a lack of truth, and sooner or later it will happen
the wind changes but we do not
and if we become a bit different
we do this for the desire to please the ones that now are with us
or that will be with us tomorrow

We are so
it's difficult to explain
some blue days, let it be, anyway you can find us here
with our sleepless nights,
but we will not be tired even when we say you another "yes."

...

We are so, sweetly complicated
more and more excited, delicate,
but you can still find us here
in stormy nights
let bring us roses
new things
and we'll tell you yet another "yes".

Italian lyrics

Ci fanno compagnia certe lettere d'amore

certe giornate amare, lascia stare, tanto ci potrai trovare qui,

nelle sere tempestose
portaci delle rose
nuove cose
e ti diremo ancora un altro "sì",

E difficile spiegare
certe giornate amare, lascia stare, tanto ci potrai trovare qui,

Pescatore (Fisherman)

A song coming from another time. A fisherman, probably in South Italy, Campania or Sicily, and his daily challenge with the sea, to find the sustain for him and his family. And his long journey, days and weeks on the Mediterranean Sea, against storms and bad weather with his little boat. And his young wife, expecting him, with fear at each travel, but with the temptation of another man, and the forbidden hope that her husband won't come back ... A song with two voices, the author, the songwriter Pierangelo Bertoli, with his strong and deep voice, and the warm voice of Fiorella Mannoia, again, expressing wishes, doubts and fears of his wife. A strong and simple song coming from another time, but still a present time since the sixties in Italy, and  that speaks to everyone also at nowadays.

Throw your nets
there will be good fishing
and sing your songs
that will calm the storm
think, think to your child
the greeting that he sent to you
and your wife waked up early in the morning
she spoke of you to God
she spoke of you to God

Tell me, tell me my Lord
tell me he'll be back
defend my man from the sea
from the dangers that he will encounter
I am too young
and black is a sad color
my skin is white and perfumed
it needs caresses yet
it needs caresses now

Come on! fisherman
go fishing and don't stop
few fishes in the net
long days in the open sea
a sea that has never given so much
sea curse
when his fury becomes large
and his wave is a giant
his wave is a giant

Tell me, tell me my Lord
tell me if he will return
That man that I feel less my man
and another smiles at me already
delete him from my mind
do not tempt me into sin
I feel a shiver when he looks at me
and he gave me a rose
he gave me a rose

Italian lyrics

Getta le tue reti
buona pesca ci sarà
e canta le tue canzoni
che burrasca calmerà
pensa pensa al tuo bambino
al saluto che ti mandò
e tua moglie sveglia di buon mattino
con Dio di te parlò
con Dio di te parlò

Dimmi dimmi mio Signore
dimmi che tornerà
l'uomo mio difendi dal mare
dai pericoli che troverà
troppo giovane son io
ed il nero è un triste colore
la mia pelle bianca e profumata
ha bisogno di carezze ancora
ha bisogno di carezze ora

Pesca forza tira pescatore

Dimmi dimmi mio Signore
dimmi se tornerà
quell'uomo che sento meno mio
ed un altro mi sorride già
scaccialo dalla mia mente
non indurmi nel peccato
un brivido sento quando mi guarda
e una rosa egli mi ha dato
una rosa lui mi ha dato

Rosa rossa pegno di amore
rosa rossa malaspina
nel silenzio della notte ora
la mia bocca gli è vicina
no per Dio non farlo tornare
dillo tu al mare
è troppo forte questa catena
io non la voglio spezzare
io non la voglio spezzare

Pesca forza tira pescatore
pesca non ti fermare
anche quando l'onda ti solleva forte
e ti toglie dal tuo pensare
e ti spazza via come foglia al vento
che vien voglia di lasciarsi andare
più leggero nel suo abbraccio forte
ma è così cattiva poi la morte
è così cattiva poi la morte

Dimmi dimmi mio Signore

Pesca forza tira pescatore

Samarcanda (Samarkand)

An old legend coming from the Far East, the ancient  capital of the emperor Tamerlane, on the "silk road", this is the inspiration for professor Roberto Vecchioni, another important and very popular Italian songwriter, for one of his best known ballades. A legend about the destiny, and the useless efforts to escape from it. With lyrics that bring you back to a distant time, a time arrived anyway to nowadays in the near countries of our Mediterranean Sea.

(Spoken)
There was a big celebration in the capital
because the war was over.
The soldiers were all returned home and had let down their currencies.
On the road people was dancing and drinking wine,
the musicians played without interruption.
It was spring and the women could finally, after so many years,
reunited with their men. At dawn the fires were extinguished
and it was then that in the crowd,
for a moment, a soldier thought to see
a woman dressed in black
looking at him with evil eyes.

Laugh, laugh, and laugh again,
Now the war does not make fear,
the uniforms are burning in the fire in the evening
the wine burns in the throat up to satiety,
the music of tambourines plays until dawn,
the soldier who danced all night
saw the black lady in the crowd,
saw that she was looking for him and he was frightened.

"Save me, save me, Great King,
let me get away, get away from here,
at the parade she was near to me,
and looked at me with malice"
"Give him, give him an animal,
son of lightning, fit for a King,
soon, as soon as possible so that he can run away,
Give him the beast that is faster than all"

Italian lyrics

(parlato)
i musicanti suonavano senza interruzione.
Era primavera e le donne finalmente potevano, dopo tanti anni,
riabbracciare i loro uomini. All'alba furono spenti i falò

Ridere, ridere, ridere ancora,
musica di tamburelli fino all'aurora,
il soldato che tutta la notte ballò
vide tra la folla quella nera signora,
vide che cercava lui e si spaventò.

"Salvami, salvami, grande sovrano,

"corri cavallo, corri ti prego
fino a Samarcanda io ti guiderò,
non ti fermare, vola ti prego
corri come il vento che mi salverò
oh oh cavallo, oh, oh cavallo, oh oh cavallo, oh oh, cavallo, oh oh

Fiumi poi campi, poi l'alba era viola,

"Sbagli, t'inganni, ti sbagli soldato
io non ti guardavo con malignità,
era solamente uno sguardo stupito,
cosa ci facevi l'altro ieri là?
T'aspettavo qui per oggi a Samarcanda
eri lontanissimo due giorni fa,
ho temuto che per ascoltar la banda
non facessi in tempo ad arrivare qua.

Non è poi così lontana Samarcanda,
corri cavallo, corri di là...
ho cantato insieme a te tutta la notte
corri come il vento che ci arriverà
oh oh cavallo, oh, oh cavallo, oh oh cavallo, oh oh cavallo oh oh
