GOT TO GO BACK

When I was a young boy

Back in Orangefield (2)

I used to gaze out

My classroom window and dream

And then go home and listen to Ray sing (3)

"I believe to my soul" after school,

Oh that love that was within me

You know it carried me through

Well it lifted me up and it filled me

Meditation contemplation too

Chorus:

Oh we've got to go back

Got to go back

Got to go back

Got to go back

For the healing go on with the dreaming

Well there's people in the street

And the summer's almost here

We've got to go outside in the fresh air

And breathe while it's still clear

Breathe it in all the way down

To your stomach too

And breathe it out with a radiance (4)

into the nightime air

We've got to go back ...

Got my ticket at the airport

Well I guess I've been marking time

I've been living in another country (5)

That operates along entirely different lines

Keep me away from porter or whiskey (6)

Don't play anything sentimental it'll make me cry

I've got to go back my friend

Is there really any need to ask why

We've got to go back ...

OH THE WARM FEELING

Oh the warm feeling

As we sat beside the sea

Oh the warm feeling as I sat by you

Like a child within the kingdom

As we sat beside the sea

Oh the warm feeling as I sat by you

And it filled with devotion

And it made me plainly see

And it healed all my emotions

As I sat by you

As we sat inside the sunshine

And we sat beside the sea

Oh the warm feeling, as I sat by you

And it filled me with religion

And it gave great comfort to me

Oh the warm feeling as I sat by you

Oh the warm feeling as we sat beside the sea

Oh the warm feeling as I sat by you.

FOREIGN WINDOW

I saw you from a foreign window

Bearing down the sufferin' road

You were carryin' your burden

To the palace of the Lord

To the palace of the Lord

I spied you from a foreign window

When the lilacs were in bloom

And the sun shone through your window pane

To the place you kept your books

You were reading on your sofa

You were singin' every prayer

That the masters had instilled in you

Since Lord Byron loved despair (7)

In the palace of the Lord

In the palace of the Lord

Bridge:

And if you get it right this time

You don't have to come back again

And if you get it right this time

There's no need to explain

I saw you from a foreign (window)

Bearing down the sufferin' road

You were carryin' your burden

You were singing about Rimbaud (8)

I was going down to Geneva

When the Kingdom had been found

I was giving you protection

From the loneliness of the crowd

In the palace of the Lord

In the palace of the Lord

They were giving you religion

Breaking bread and drinking wine

And you laid out on the green hills

Just like when you were a child

I saw you from a foreign window

You were trying to find your way back home

You were carrying your defects

Sleeping on a pallet on the floor

In the palace of the Lord

In the palace of the Lord

In the palace of the Lord

A TOWN CALLED PARADISE

Copycats ripped off my words

Copycats ripped off my songs

Copycats ripped off my melody

It doesn't matter what they say

It doesn't matter what they do

All that matters is my relationship to you

Gonna take you out

Get you in my car

We're going for a long long drive

We're going down to A Town Called Paradise (9)(10)

Down where we can be free

We're gonna drink that wine

We're gonna jump for joy

In a town called Paradise

We're going up the mountainside

Child you can look for miles

And see the vision on the west

We're gonna swing round

And look from north to south

Swing round from east to west

And go round in a circle too

And we're gonna start dancing

Like we've never done before

I'm gonna take you in my arms

I'm gonna squeeze you tight

Everything will be alright

We're gonna get that squealin' feelin'

Gonna take you down to a town called Paradise,

Down where we can be free

It doesn't matter what they say

It doesn't matter what they do

All that matters is my relationship to you

By the river we will linger

As we drive down to be free

We're gonna ride all night long

All along the ancient highway

Gonna be there for the mornin' comes

IN THE GARDEN

The streets are always wet with rain

After a summer shower when I saw you standin'

In the garden in the garden wet with rain

You wiped the teardrops from your eye in sorrow

As we watched the petals fall down to the ground

And as I sat beside you I felt the

Great sadness that day in the garden

And then one day you came back home

You were a creature all in rapture

You had the key to your soul

And you did open that day you came back to the garden

The olden summer breeze was blowin' on your face

The light of God was shinin' on your countenance divine

And you were a violet colour as you

Sat beside your father and your mother in the garden

The summer breeze was blowin' on your face

Within your violet you treasure your summery words

And as the shiver from my neck down to my spine

Ignited me in daylight and nature in the garden

And you went into a trance

Your childlike vision became so fine

And we heard the bells inside the church

We loved so much

And felt the presence of the youth of

Eternal summers in the garden

And as it touched your cheeks so lightly

Born again you were and blushed and we touched each other lightly

And we felt the presence of the Christ

And I turned to you and I said

No Guru, no method, no teacher

Just you and I and nature

And the father in the garden

No Guru, no method, no teacher

Just you and I and nature

And the Father and the

Son and the Holy Ghost

In the garden wet with rain

No Guru, no method, no teacher

Just you and I and nature and the holy ghost

In the garden, in the garden, wet with rain

No Guru, no method, no teacher

Just you and I and nature

And the Father in the garden

TIR NA NOG

We were standing in the kingdom

And by the mansion gate

We stood enraptured by the silence

As the birds sang their heavenly song

In Tir Na Nog

We stopped in the church of Ireland

And prayed to our father

And climbed up the mountainside

With fire in our hearts

And we walked all the way to Tir Na Nog (12)

I said with my eyes that

I recognized your chin (13)

It was my long lost friend

To help me from another lifetime

We took each others hands and cried

Like a river when we said hello

And we walked to Tir Na Nog

We made a big connection

On a golden autumn day

We were standing in the garden wet with rain (14)

And our souls were young again (15)

In Tir Na Nog

And outside the storm was raging

Outside Jerusalem (16)

We drove in our chariots of fire

Following the big sun in the west

Going up, going up, to

Tir Na Nog

You came into my life

And you filled me and you filled me

Oh so joyous

By the clear cool crystal streams

Where the roads were quiet and still

And we walked all the way

To Tir Na Nog

How can we not be attached

After all we're only human

The only way then is to never come back

Except I wouldn't want that would you

If we weren't together again

In Tir Na Nog

We've been together before

In a different incarnation (17)

And we loved each other then as well

And we sat down in contemplation (18)

Many many many times you kissed mine eyes

In Tir Na Nog

HERE COMES THE KNIGHT

On the road with my sword

And my shield in my hand

Pressing on to the new day

This love will surely last forever

This love will surely last always

In the valley I see horsemen pass

Baby, baby, baby they don't want this love to last

There's a battle for the throne

And it's raging down in your soul

It says this love will surely last forever

This love will surely last always

Bridge:

I've been accused of truth and alchemy

I've been accused of speaking out for freedom too

I gave a demonstration in front of a crowd

A man saw my hands move and he began to shout

Here come horsemen through the pass

They say cast a cold eye on life, on death (19)

There's a battle for the throne

And it means to thine own self be true

And it says this love will surely last forever

This love will surely last always

THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION

Never give a sucker an even break

When he's breaking through

To a new level of consciousness

There always seems to be more

Obstacles in the way

Thanks for the information I know

It's only a combat zone

Thanks for the memory,

I'll just have

To carry on on my own

And it's wonderful and it's marvelous

How we can ever make it through

Sometimes I wonder how we can ever

Make it from day to day

Then they told me he who believes first will be later

And he who believes later will be first

Chorus:

And it's wonderful ....

ONE IRISH ROVER

Tell me the story now

Now that it's over

Wrap it in glory

For one Irish Rover

Tell me you wiser now

Tell me you older

Wrap it in glory

For one Irish Rover (20)

Bridge:

I can tell by the light in your eye

That you're so far away

Like a ship out on the sea

Without a sail, you've gone astray

Tell me the facts real straight

Don't make me over

Make it come out alright

And wrap it in glory

For one Irish Rover

For one Irish Rover

One Irish Rover

One Irish Rover

IVORY TOWER

Chorus:

When you come down

From your Ivory Tower

You will see how it really must be

To be like me to see like me

To feel like me

Take a look at me I'm a poor man's son

I never did no harm to no one

You've got money in the bank

And I don't have none

When you come down ...

Bridge:

You can see through

Your rose coloured glasses

In a world that seems

like glamour to you

You've got opinions and judgements about

All kind of things

That you don't know anything about

Don't you know the price that I have to pay

Just to do everything I have to do

Do you think that there's nothing to it

You should try it sometime

When you come down ...

Note

  (2)

The name of the school in Belfast of Van Morrison when he was a boy.

 (3)

A reference to the great soul singer Ray Charles, one of the main model for the young Van at the beginning of his career.

(4)

Probably it refers to a typical yoga breathing technique, aimed at increasing inner peace..

(5)

The United States of America.

(6)

The "whiskey" is the distillation of barley malt Irish (not to be confused with Scotch whiskey that is similar but not the same)

(7)

Lord Byron, the famous English Romantic poet 800. It is probably a reference to the romantic poetry in general.

(8)

Arthur Rimbaud, French poet of the 800, a leading exponent of decadence and “počte maudit” par excellence.

(9)

It's likely an allusion to the song “A Town Called Malice” of Paul Weller.

(10)

The song alludes to the lied "Jerusalem" on the verses of the poet Milton and music of the English composer Elgar. The symbolic city is therefore likely to be Jerusalem.

(12)

In Gaelic, the ancient language of Ireland, Tir Na Nog is "The land of youth." It may indicate the afterlife or the fantastic realm of the gods (such as the Walhalla of the Germans), and in this sense is quoted in the Irish poem "Oisin in Tir Na Nog" which tells of the exploits of the hero Oisin in the realm of Tir Na Nog, and that is probably among the influences of Van Morrison. Tir Na Nog in this song symbolizes hence a higher dimension, which can be reached after passing many tests, like the hero Oisin, and that is at the same time the dimension of innocence and expectation in which you live in your youth (The Land of Youth). A mythology very close to that of the hill outside the town, mentioned in the novel The Catcher in the Rye of JD Salinger.

(14)

A cross reference to the other song In The Garden.

(15)

Tir Na Nog as The Land Of Youth.

(16)

Jerusalem is of course “A Town Called Paradise”, another cross-reference.

(17)

Explicit reference to the countless cycle of life that awaits the man before being able to get to the real life (according to the Buddhist religion as reported by Tibetan sages).

(18)

Another quote from a song of this album, Oh The Warm Feeling. With this quote the circle closes: stay in full peace in the garden wet (In The Garden), have tasted the simple joy of watching the sea together sitting on the bank, these are thebsteps to get to the real life, in Tir Na Nog.

(19)

The verses of the song directly cite a poem by William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), Irish national poet, Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923, patriot and rediscoverer of the spiritual traditions of his homeland
Under Ben Bulden

Cast a cold eye
On life, on death.
Horseman, pass by!

(20)

The song mentions the legend of a sailing ship called "The Irish Rover", which has also inspired a traditional Irish song with the same title. The ship left the port of Cork in Ireland on July 4, 1806, bound for New York, but was wrecked during the trip.
